The story of our Jiggs Dinner

Jiggs Dinner is an annual event held exclusively at the Toad ’n’ Turtle in Calgary’s southeast (address). It is an event created and hosted by our head chef Valerie Dwyer who wished to share her love and passion for food and her home province, Newfoundland, with others in Calgary and surrounding area.

Val hails from Tilting, Newfoundland, a small yet important community on Fogo Island. The passion for what comprises Newfoundland culture has been ingrained in Val since childhood. Her parents are Newfoundland school teachers and her father is also a noted professional storyteller and author of four books. Growing up she played varsity basketball for MUN and attended Holland Collage in PEI for the culinary arts. Like her parents, Val continues to infuse Newfoundland culture in everything she does!

Drawing from her history, training, and continued love for her home province, Val brings you a true Newfoundland experience on February 23rd. Whether you yourself hail from the Maritimes or have only experienced it vicariously through music and film, we invite you to dive into our Jiggs Dinner!

The body may leave Newfoundland but the heart always remains.
